Artwork preparation is the step most brands rush—and the one that causes the most reprints. Most of the time, a file that looks fine on your screen may not get accepted at the press. Colors are not CMYK, fonts are not outlined, or there is no bleed. This guide will show you exactly what print-ready means for custom packaging. Like the file formats printers accept, how bleed and safe zones work, why dielines shouldn’t be touched, and the specific mistakes that slow production down. What “Print-Ready” Actually Means for Packaging

Packaging artwork isn’t the same as a flyer or a poster. It has to survive being cut, folded, glued, and sometimes wrapped around a curved surface—and it still has to look right afterwards. That’s why “print-ready art” for packaging means more than a high-resolution file. A packaging artwork is created on the correct dieline, in the correct color mode, and considering production.

Most artwork preparation problems come down to one of five things:

  • Wrong file format,
  • wrong color mode,
  • missing bleed,
  • un-outlined fonts,
  • or low-resolution pictures.

File Formats: What to Send (and Avoid)

Custom box printers work almost exclusively with vector file formats because vector artwork scales without losing quality—critical when a dieline gets resized or a logo gets enlarged across different box SKUs.

Preferred formats:

  • PDF (Press Quality or High Quality Print preset)—the most universally accepted print-ready art format
  • AI (Adobe Illustrator native file)
  • EPS (Encapsulated PostScript)

Avoid submitting only:

  • JPEG or PNG files for line art, logos, or text (these are raster formats — fine for photos, not for vector graphics)
  • Files still in RGB color mode
  • Files with the dieline layer merged into the artwork

CMYK vs. RGB: Why Color Mode Trips People Up

This is the most common artwork preparation mistake. Screens are based on a light RGB color model. But CMYK ink is made up of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black and prints color. Convert too late, or not at all, and colors shift—sometimes dramatically. Bright blues and greens look dull or muddy when converting from RGB to CMYK.

At the beginning, use a CMYK file instead of changing the RGB file to CMYK. A more accurate print preview will appear on screen. Don’t use CMYK for logo color matches. Use a Pantone (PMS) spot color for the logo color. Pantone has 30% CMYK-friendly colors. Tell your printer early on about exact-match colors instead of assuming the conversion will work. The rest of the colors will change enough to be noticeable.

Bleed, Trim, and Safe Zones Explained

Packaging is cut and folded after printing, and no cutting process is perfectly precise. Bleed, trim, and safe zones exist to absorb that variance so you don’t end up with white slivers at the edges or text that gets sliced off.

  • Trim/cut line—where the final piece is actually cut. This is the box’s real edge.
  • Bleed—artwork extended past the trim line so there’s no unprinted gap if the cut shifts slightly. Industry standard is a minimum of 0.125″ (3 mm) on all sides, though your printer may specify more for larger or more complex box styles.
  • Safe zone—the buffer where important text, logos, and barcodes should stay clear of the cut line. The same 0.125″ minimum applies, measured inward.

If you don’t bleed, there may be thin white lines around the edges after you trim. Crowd the safe zone, and you risk text getting clipped.

Dielines: The Blueprint You Shouldn’t Touch

A dieline is the structural template for your print. That shows where the box will be cut, folded, glued, and perforated. Use it as a technical drawing, not like a design layer.

A few rules that are more important than people realise:

  • Don’t resize, rotate, or redraw the dieline. Even small changes can throw off the automated cutting process.
  • Keep the dieline on its own locked layer, separate from your artwork.
  • Don’t flatten the dieline into your final print file unless your printer specifically asks for it—most want it removed before final submission, with cut/crease/bleed indicated by color-coded lines instead (commonly black for cut, red for crease/fold, and green for bleed and safe zone, though exact color conventions vary by printer).

Fonts, Line Weights, and Image Resolution

Three smaller details cause a disproportionate number of production holds:

Fonts. Outline all text before submitting your final file (in Illustrator: select your text, then Type > Create Outlines). This locks the typeface into the artwork itself, so a missing font on the printer’s end can’t cause it to be swapped for something else. Keep minimum font size around 6 pt for dark text on a light background and 8 pt for light text on a dark background—thinner or condensed typefaces may need to be even larger to stay legible.

Line weights. Too thin hairlines and strokes should be 0.25 pt (0.003″). Fine lines can cause things to disappear or print incorrectly.

Image resolution. Photographs and rasters should be printed at 300 DPI. Scaling up afterward lowers resolution and highlights pixels. Replacing a low-resolution image is better than upscaling.

Artwork Prep Differs by Box Style

This part gets skipped in most artwork instructions, but it matters: bleed, safe zone, and layout considerations aren’t identical across every packaging format.

  • Flat, single-panel boxes (folding cartons, most retail boxes): Standard bleed/safe zone rules apply cleanly—the surface is flat before and after assembly.
  • Corrugated shippers: Because these often use fewer print colors and coarser board, fine detail and small text can lose sharpness. Keep critical text larger and avoid thin gradients.
  • Rigid boxes: When designing artwork for these, a wrap-style construction across the corners and lip is often required. Learn how a layout works at the seams before committing.
  • Tubes and cylindrical packaging: Curved surfaces introduce alignment tolerance at the seam. Avoid design elements meant to line up perfectly across a seam, since even small manufacturing tolerances (commonly cited around ±1.5mm in tube production) can throw off a tight match.

  2. Prepress review—a real person checks your file against spec (color mode, bleed, resolution, dieline integrity).
  3. Digital proof sent back for your approval—this is your last chance to catch a color, spelling, or layout issue before it prints.
  4. Written/digital approval from you, which starts the production clock.
  5. Production run, followed by delivery.

This step takes longer than expected. But it is worth it, because correcting a mistake after the print run is more expensive than in proofing.
